No travel guide can be all things to all people, but this Lonely Planet Travel Guide to Washington, Oregon, and the Pacific Northwest is a very good introduction to the region. It covers the U.S. states of Oregon and Washington, along with Canada's Vancouver and Vancouver Island. The format is geared to readers who want their information quickly, in bite-sized chunks with maps and graphics. The guide has only a handful of pictures, but it does make a good effort to sort the attractions of the Pacific Northwest to appeal to a variety of reader tastes and interests, from the seashore to outdoor recreation to micro-breweries to traveling with children.Readers may find the geographic breakdown of the guide to be especially useful. Oregon has seven sections, Washington has five, and the Canadian corner has two more. This breakout allows for a more nuanced approach to large but distinctive regions such as the cities of Portland and Seattle, the Williamette Valley, and Vancouver Island. The sections have lots of suggestions for accommodations, food, and local attractions. Highly recommended as a planning aid for a vacation or visit.
Here for 18months and needed a book to show us around the entire pacific north west, also not just the big towns but we will be around a lot of areas that are not in the usual tourist destinations. This book however, seems to have it all!Pros: Topical, informative, humorous, well writtenCons: None that i can find yetWell worth a buy if you are doing any sort of travelling around the pnw!
I'm a fan of the Lonely Planet series and I have used them for my travel many times. Both inside and outside the States. But I feel a bit disapointed for this one. Not much helpful information which I can find on the Internet. The authors are Americans so they could not make their writing style as "discovery" style like the other authors did in the other guides.
I am planning a trip to Portland during Easter and Lonely Planet was the first guide book came to mind. It offers good information on historical and cultural backgrounds, as well as practical information for where to stay and where/what to see. I love hiking and know that Oregon is great for that, but have no idea where to start, this book provided great information and I basically planned my trip according to its suggestions.
I bought this book before we took an RV trip to Washington and Oregon. We were gone for 5 weeks and visited manyof the places listed in this book. Very helpful, good photos, lots of information.
OK if you are doing a quick tour of the NW but not if you live here. I always buy the tour book for where I live and have been happy with them but this book is too general. It only has what I would say are the top tourist spots in the cities and not information on things "off the beaten path".
Great information and very helpful guide. I like the rrecommendatios for lodging, food and local hiked and outdoor activities. I have used this guide on many trips.
This is a great guidebook for visiting Washington and Oregon. Gives lots of great information for places to visit. I recommend it to anyone going on vacation in that area.
