An excellent catalog, released to coincide with the Met's 2016 Le Brun exhibit. It is interesting to compare Le Brun's life (1755-1842) and work with those of portraitist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). After somewhat informal training, both used their formidable skills to paint portraits of the highest heads of state as well as the most illustrious members of society. While Stuart worked in a style that was basically English, Le Brun's style was thoroughly French and very feminine. Stuart's penetrating portraits focus on the sitter. Le Brun's portraits depict sitters in the stylized way that was expected by the royals and other privileged elite that sat for her. Some of her female sitters tend to look alike (and also look like her). All seem to have the same hairstyle and wear the same type of accessories. Her paintings, while filled with sumptuous details, tend to be a bit boring in a museum environment; in contrast, Stuart's demand close attention.This book does a excellent, scholarly job of detailing Le Brun's life and work. The color reproductions are very good. Works are arranged chronologically, which unfortunately does reveal a marked decline in quality almost amounting to self-parody as the artist got older. Overall, hers was a remarkable body of work for any artist given the unsettled political climate of the time. If it were possible to play editor for this book, it would have been interesting to include photographs of some of Le Brun's works in their original frames, hung in the sumptuous interiors for which they were designed. Taking them all out of context makes it more difficult to appreciate the sheer size of many of the paintings from the book alone. There is no discussion in the book of Le Brun having assistants. If she didn't, then the fact that she produced so many very large paintings in her career is truly amazing.
One of the best art books I have ever acquired. Not only was Elisabeth VigeÌe le Brun an absolute master of her craft, but this volume of her works presents them in beautiful reproductions.The exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art contained ninety portraits, all but three of them by VigeÌe le Brun, and each is given a full-page, high-quality reproduction. The text accompanying each portrait is more than usually interesting, as besides some technical details it gives information both about the sitter and the artist’s attitude to the sitter, including some less flattering observations.The catalogue proper is preceded by several lavishly-illustrated chapters about VigeÌe le Brun, her career, and the French art world of the time. She was a favourite painter of royalty, and her flight the French Revolution brought her into contact with the aristocracy of several major centres, including St Petersburg, where she was enthusiastically received.If you like portraits that are not only good likenesses but illuminate the character of the sitter, you will like this book.
I missed the Kimbell Museum exhibit and catalog of Le Brun's work in 1982, but this book is great compensation. The reproductions are beautiful, as are the essays. I'm not an art fanatic, but I am interested in the period. Le Brun knew everyone, and it seems as if she painted everyone. Check out her work. You'll almost feel like you can touch her subjects.The book arrived in excellent condition and in a timely fashion despite my not having a Prime membership. In addition, the book is very well constructed, heavy paper and stitched, not glued. Good purchase.
I am an artist and I have quite a large collection of books on various artists and techniques. This is the best book on an artist that I have ever seen. I have a very short attention span but I continue returning to the book over and over! The images in the book are of good quality and there are clear descriptions of most of the paintings on the opposite page which makes it easy to pick up and put down for a while, then to pick it up again. The way the text is layed out with the images is one of the reasons I've learned so much about the artist and the backgrounds of the people in the portraits.
Le Brun's art is beautiful and historical, and this book is a must-have for anyone interested in her art. In addition, she is a minor character in *Abundance* by Sena Jeter Naslund and a protagonist in *The Fountain of St. James Court; or, Portrait of the Artist as an Old Woman*. The latter is my favorite Naslund novel.
Excellent exhibition book from the recent MET show on the artist. Much less expensive than at the MET store even with the member discount. The Book is very well done.
