Praise for Jessica Abel's Out on the WireA Library Journal and Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2015A Tech Times Best Comic of 2015“A boundary-pushing comic, a love letter from one blossoming new media to another...Out on the Wire is a terrific book for radio superfans and would-be producers, a niche audience that isn't so niche anymore.”—Los Angeles Times“With comics and podcasts both on the rise, it’s a perfect time for a media collision: Abel investigates modern narrative radio and its stars.” –Entertainment Weekly“One of fall's coolest graphic reads...Consider the 240 pages a documentary comic and Abel your host.”—Marie Claire“What makes [Out on the Wire] especially fascinating is its use of visuals to represent an aural form; not only are we reading behind-the-scenes stories of what we eventually hear, but we get a rare glimpse of what the people and places in them look like thanks to the not-often-enough-used comics journalism.” —Chicagoreader.com“This instructive, impassioned, and educational volume uses a deliberate and friendly approach in the vein of Scott McCloud… A must-read not just for listeners of today’s great flowering of audio storytelling but for those who want to learn how to do it themselves.”—Publishers Weekly“A richly engaging graphic narrative about radio storytelling and storytelling in general… A spirited work whose readership should not be limited to those who make radio narrative or love to listen to it.” —Kirkus Reviews [starred]“Abel (La Perdida) has performed a metamasterpiece by reporting with visual finesse and detail the complicated and sometimes precarious process behind public radio shows such as Radiolab and This American Life… Indispensible for communications collections and a valuable asset for anyone considering a career in media.” —Library Journal [starred]

I saw this book got mentioned on some website and the first thing that caught my eye was that Jessica Abel is the comic artist author. This is a comic book on storytelling techniques of radio shows. Or what makes successful radio shows successful. Some of the shows mentioned in the book are This American Life, The Moth, Radiolab, Planet Money, Snap Judgment, Serial, Invisibilia and other lesser known ones.I bought this book because I'm a fan of the Planet Money show put out by NPR. I wanted to find out how they actually create such interesting and engaging shows. If you like radio or storytelling, then this is the book to get. If you know nothing about radio, maybe you might want to get this book to learn more and hopefully learn something from the insight provided by veteran hosts and producers, such as Ira Glass from This American Life. Ira Glass appears as a comic character in this book together with Jessica Abel to walk you through the inner workings of making the shows.Jessica Abe interviews all the journalists working at those radio shows and comes up with this book that talks about storytelling, the structure and how to go about getting people to talk, and to package or angle the story in a way that people will find engaging to listen to. Each producer or journalist will have a different take on what makes for an interesting story, and it's enlightening to see how they apply those techniques into actual stories that have been broadcasted.Putting out a radio show is extremely hard work and you'll learn all about that in this book, and in the process develop a new sense of appreciation for the people working behind.I like books that goes behind the scenes to find out how something or someone works. Most highly recommended.Do not get the Kindle version because the text is too small to read.
Was so looking forward to reading this tome, but it has proven absolutely nearly impossible on my kindle paperwhite. Do yourself a favor and order the physical copy. Incredibly disappointed with the formatting -- it doesn't do the book justice.
Jessica, thank you so much for writing this book!!! It seriously changed my whole game.I was working on my independently produced podcast Working Sunday for a year or so before being recommended your book. It was a complete gamechanger for me. It not only reinvigorated my enthusiasm (which was waning) but gave me super practical tips on how to build scenes and craft stories ...I've completely re-organized my workflow as a result.I can't thank you enough :)-Reubenworkingsunday.com
My Aviation News Talk podcast is a news and pilot skills show for pilots and student pilots, but I came across a compelling story that I wanted to do in a narrative format. I'd figured out some of the devices used by This American Life and NPR podcasts, but Out on the Wire really helped me understand their methodology more fully. I read the book over a weekend and then made many small changes to the episode based on what I learned in the book. I released the episode a few days ago, and downloads are running about 35% ahead of other recent episodes. And the FAA contacted me saying they'd like to promote the episode through their social media! Thank you Jessica! What I learned from you has given my show a strong boost! First, it's important to know that this is written as a graphic novel. An interesting choice for a book about audio storytelling. But it works. The graphics and personal narrative make it feel like you are visiting with Ira Glass and others - it's a behind the scenes tour of how to make great radio. How to do audio storytelling. And the graphic format, helps punctuate the profound insights on how the stories are made. My only criticism is the text is small so bring reading glasses when to sit down to enjoy this book.
While on the surface a manual for creating "narrative documentary" radio pieces, this book is also a great resource for storytelling in general. I approached this book as a Moth storyslam winner wannabe, and found the focus on what makes a story compelling very valuable. Learning about the process of my NPR and podcast heroes was awesome. If you want to improve your storytelling craft, go find yourself a workshop with a proven storyteller from radio. If you can't find one in your area, reading this book is a great backup plan, or at least a good supplement to an editor.
This is an awesome book for anyone who is working on storytelling. Also great for podcast nerds who want to know how the sausage is made. I’ve been inspired by it, and the podcast techniques have helped me up my game at presentations for work (I’m a researcher in tech.) Very consumable book, I recommend it now to all my colleagues.
Clear, creative, inspiring. The information about storytelling comes from very talented producers and is quite technical. Someone interested in pursuing production of radio stories (as I am) could and should use this as a blueprint for their work -- or at least a reference point for their own instincts and knowledge. Abel distills the creative process into a fun and understandable narrative relevant for anyone interested in storytelling not just radio-heads.
This book is so helpful. I had many questions about starting a narrative podcast and this has definitely guided my process along with other resources. It's nice to see what it's like behind-the-scenes.
