I'm an acupuncturist and had to do a talk in my first grader's class. This book was perfect! It explained all the aspects of Chinese Medicine in a fun and interesting story. All the kids stayed engaged and liked the animal characters. One child even said that he gets cupping done at home! My 3 year old then snuck it into her backpack and her teacher told me she read it to her preschool class and they loved it as well. She said the 2 and 3 year olds were walking around saying "yin yang". I now have it out in my clinic's waiting room and even adults are picking it up and enjoying it. Whether you are in the field or just looking for a way to introduce Chinese Medicine to your kids - I would highly recommend this book!
Updated January 14th, 2016: This book get more attention than all the others in my reception area. I've ordered multiple copies because parents want to take it home. If you're an Acupuncturist, it is should be in your waiting room.This is a very good resource. It helps clarify not only what happens during a visit to an Acupuncturist, but also *why*. It is well illustrated. The colors and animals are bright and animated, but not overwhelming. It's long enough to cover the basics of Oriental medicine and short enough to fit a child's attention span.If you are an Acupuncturist trained in pediatrics, you should order a couple of copies. Many parents are going to want to take it home to show their children. Some to better explain what happens when mommy or daddy get treated, others to put their children at ease prior to their first treatment. I bought 5 and they came in on a rainy day and got soaked. I was immediately sent 5 more with no trouble. I gave them out as little gifts and they were a hit. Really cute and informative little book. Get a few.. ;)
Awesome Book! Read it to my class of 3-4 year olds and they LOVED it! :) My fiance (who is in school for Acupuncture) visited the class and shared his knowledge with the class. It was a great book to accompany our human body themed curriculum! :)

Maya & Friends Visit the Acupuncturist is a book written in children’s rhyme and serves as a charming introduction to acupuncture for kids and adults alike. Imaginatively written by practicing acupuncturist Samara White and delightfully illustrated by Troy White, Maya & Friends is a whimsical story that uses the harmonious interplay of animal and human characters and their friendship to explain to the reader in a clear and concise way the basics of acupuncture treatment and its benefits. I strongly recommend this book to all those adults who are familiar with acupuncture and want to find a melodious and playful way to introduce it to their children as well to any and all of those adults who have not yet become acquainted with acupuncture and are looking for a simple, non-heady way to learn.
Samara and Troy did an excellent job putting this book together. I originally purchased a copy to share with my nephew, though it now spends more time on loan to friends then at home.My nephew really enjoys the story and quickly connected to the characters - especially Bobby Bear. Packaging adventure and Chinese Medicine together makes for a very friendly and approachable introduction to acupuncture and stokes curiosity in a way that I would have never imagined. I hope this team finds new adventures for Maya to take and share with us.
I love the book especially since it rhymes! My son loved the pictures and the story, he identified with the characters and I recommend it to anyone who connects to acupuncture and has kids!
