As an undergraduate I read this book in search of a basic understanding of Gladstone's life and the major events within it. Whilst the book did yield that Partridge managed to miss out some fairly fundamental events. He did not, for instance, make any mention of Gladstone's response to Peel's factory acts, the 1859 reform bill or clause 25 during his disappointingly brief discussion of Forster's Education Act. I would recommend forgetting about this book and reading the more detailed and better researched biographies of Gladstone by H.C.G Matthew or Jenkins.
