I am a big fan of the Jon Reznick Thriller Series. So it pains me to give this book a one star. I could not finish it. The characters were not likable, there was to much repetitiveness about the broken home back ground, there was no color in the description of the locations and the action was lacking. Sorry. I will suck it up and not return it for my money as I do when I hate a story,( a way to vote with your money).. I encourage J.B. to continue on, but try harder.
I am an avid reader of military and espionage novels and although the writing and editing are good, this novel falls extremely short in the realities of field operations tradecraft and equipment type and use.But this only if you can completely suspend belief in what the hero can do, the equipment he uses and the capability of such. There is no 9mm pistol I am aware of good for 200 yards!
Sometimes fiction is over the top, and turns to preposterous and turns people away from the story. Such is the case with this book.Three incidents in the story ruin it for me: 1. AN EMP rifle small enough to fit in a backpack?!?! There isn't a chance in Hell. But even if it was true, and the accuracy was capable of delivering a pulse of sufficient quality and strength to cause a heart attack, it would have caused severe burns on the skin. 2. Scaling a sheer cliff with broken ribs only two days ago isn't possible even with the best drugs available! 3. And I feel this is the worst stretch of the imagination is the Fentanyl grenades. This is total BS! Fentanyl would kill almost all people who are exposed. If inhaled, virtually instantly, but it would also be absorbed by the body's skin.I enjoy a good book and admire an active imagination, but keep it somewhat believable!
J.B. THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT INTRODUCTION TO A NEW SERIES AND CHARACTER. SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT THAN THE JOE REZNICK SERIES. VERY GOOD STORY PLOT LOVED THE RESURRECTION OF NATHAN BY SANDS AND THEN SANDS BETRAYS HIM. CAN'T WAIT FOR NO.2 IN AUG. 5 STARS PLUS. CARL CLAUSE
After reading this book, I blew out my cheeks (seems to be what the people in the book do) and decided I didn't want to read any more of this character. The other thing that bothered me was the use of colorful language. Most of it didn't even fit the story line. I have read many of this authors books but I will stay away from the Nathan Stone books.
This is an interesting read. The protagonist is a sociopath professional killer. He reminded much about Rambo with a little more style. My concern is that this book is projected as first in a series I don’t think I want to follow the life of a cold-blooded killer. Anti-heroes normally only kill bad guys; “Rogue†will kill anybody. It is well written and interesting. I will probably try one more by Turner to see how he turns sympathy to an American Ghost.
Hang on! Once you start reading, clear your calendar. Turner's short-chapter, active, and engaging writing style propels you forward until the end of the book. This first of a three short novel series is a fun ride, well worth the journey. Not too technical, author includes enough detail to keep things vivid and interesting, without getting sidetracked.
A compelling story. Gripping action. Unexpected twists. On the downside, dialog is littered with phrases not all characters would use, like, "Give me a break!" . Every meal is washed down with something. Overlook these author habits and the book will be a pleasure that is becoming too rare in today's flooded market.
